According to this article from BBC News today, 50% of small businesses in the UK don't have an online presence:

As a web designer I'm both appalled and excited. I'm thinking "how can people do business without having a web site, they should be forced to pay me to get them online!" and at the same time it seems like there are a lot of potential new clients out there who haven't yet realised what a web site could do for them.
So, what can a web site do for your business?
- Increase visibility - get to customers who would never have found you otherwise
- Look bigger than you are - a great website can change people's opinions about your company.
- Increase trust - Give people the impression that you are professional, reliable and trustworthy - you are all these things, so why not let people know.
- It can work for sales, support, marketing, distribution...
Not that all businesses need a website, the article gives an example of a small business getting enough work via word of mouth in a local area and I would be the last person to say that they need a website. But any business looking to expand, charge more for goods and services or increase profits should think about reaching a larger audience. Websites are (among other things) a way of marketing your company and I can't think of any successful companies that don't engage in marketing. For a small business particularly, having a website is a low cost way of presenting your company to the world.
A bit of quick research on the internet and I've found the price of a half page ad in a local paper in Sheffield is £400 - that's just for the space, you also have to get it designed and it only lasts for one week. For a few weeks worth of that kind of advertising you could get a very nice website!
